The best free VST Instruments

Making digital music is cheap. That's because once you own a good DAW like FL Studio, you can beef it up with lots of free VSTs. Sure there's a lot of trash out there, but there are some gems that easily surpass commercial VSTs in quality and sound.

So here's my list of interesting VSTs that are free and mostly sound great.

OBXD

OBXD is an emulator of the famous OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 synths. It sounds very thick and and direct. It has a very powerful sound that you'll need to tame with some EQ but it can be useful.

They have some videos of its sound on their website which you'll see when you click the link below.

Triple Cheese by u-he

This VST is as tasty as its name sounds. In contrast to OBXD, Triple Cheese has a very soft and warm sound. It's good for pads and ambiences.

Listen to its cheesy fullness in this video. For absolutely free, it's a must have.

Tyrell N6 by u-he

This one is amazing. I would describe its sound as "dimensional" because it doesn't sound too dry out of the box. Its bass presets are amazing, they are better than many VST's that cost money. This one is awesome, honestly.

It's not the best video quality, but the guy goes through multiple sounds which is helpful.
